Updated Information Energy Bill Relief Scheme

What this means for you and your energy bills

The government has introduced the Energy Prices Bill to provide support with energy bills for domestic and non-domestic consumers during the winter.

A package of energy support measures to help with electricity and heating bills was initially announced by government on Tuesday 11th October 2022 and subsequently updated on Monday 17th October.

This letter sets out what those measures are, how they relate to heat network customers’ energy bills, and where you can find further support and information and provides further clarification, superseding the previous letter.

Please note that our customers will not have to take action to receive any of the support measures highlighted below.

Your Electricity Bills

Our records indicate that you have a domestic electricity tariff with another supplier. This means that some of the government’s energy support measures will be applied directly to your electricity bill by your electricity supplier. You will not need to apply for these measures.

Energy Support Measures for Heat Network Customers

The government has introduced 4 measures that will support customers on heat networks:

  1. £100 credit specifically for domestic heat network customers
  • Customers on heat networks will receive a one-off £100 credit.
  • As you have a domestic electricity tariff with another supplier, you do not need to apply for this £100 credit, it will automatically be added to your electricity bill.
  1. £400 credit via the Energy Bills Support Scheme
  • Customers on heat networks will receive a one-off £400 credit via the Energy Bills Support Scheme.
  • As you have a domestic electricity tariff with another supplier, you do not need to apply for this £400 credit, it will automatically be added to your electricity bill.
  1. Heating and hot water bill support via the Energy Bill Relief Scheme
  • East London Energy heat network customers could be eligible for heating and hot water bill support via the Energy Bill Relief Scheme.
  • The Energy Bill Relief Scheme (EBRS) is to be applied to energy usage for all domestic and non-domestic heat network customers between 1st October 2022 and 31st March 2023.
  • It is our obligation to communicate to you the detail of how any EBRS discount will be applied per customer account, within 30 days of any EBRS discount being received from our utility suppliers.
  • We have not received any EBRS discount to date so your October energy bills which you will be receiving shortly will not include any discount. We will send you a further letter to notify you of any EBRS discount that you may be due before you receive the energy bill in December.
  • Any discount will be a credit applied to your account, a reduction on the fixed or variable unit prices, a reduction of direct debit charged or a reduction of the debt.
  • The government has confirmed that the Energy Bill Relief Scheme will be reviewed on 31 March 2023. We will update you on the outcome of this review as soon as we are able to.
  1. Energy Price Guarantee Cap

As you have a domestic electricity tariff with another supplier, you will benefit from the Energy Price Guarantee Cap which limits the unit cost of electricity to 34.0p/kWh. This cap applies to usage from the 1st October 2022 and ends on 31st March 2023. You do not need to apply for this benefit, your electricity supplier will apply it to your bill.

Our commitment

East London Energy is committed to ensuring that all heat network customers receive the full benefit of the government’s energy support measures as quickly as possible. We will continue to work closely with government and other stakeholders to make this happen and we will keep our customers informed of any developments or changes at the earliest possible opportunity.
